NLC Member Calls for Senators to Live on Minimum Wage to Understand Workers’ Struggles

Comrade Bamgbose Betty, former treasurer of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has urged National Assembly members to adopt the current minimum wage to experience the hardships faced by workers living paycheck to paycheck.

In the midst of the nationwide strike, Betty highlighted the unbearable suffering endured by Nigerian workers. “When you get paid, within two or three days, the salary is nowhere to be found. Is that not suffering?” she asked, emphasizing the need for a significant wage increase.

Currently, Nigerian workers earn a minimum wage of ₦30,000, but the labour union demands it be raised to nearly ₦500,000. Betty argued that only by experiencing this meager salary would Senators understand the plight of the common worker.

Despite ongoing negotiations, the NLC initiated a nationwide strike on June 3, 2024, due to the Federal Government’s failure to meet their demands. The Federal Government has now called for a meeting with NLC and TUC leaders to resolve the strike.
