The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) believes that Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, will not support Julius Abure’s continued tenure as the party’s national chairman.
In an interview, the Deputy President of the NLC Political Commission, Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, expressed this view, refuting claims that the union had resolved its differences with Abure and members of the National Working Committee (NWC).
This stance follows a denial from Obi’s camp, which stated that the former Anambra State governor had not endorsed the Abure-led NWC after their contentious convention.
Tensions between the party leadership and Obi’s camp increased last week when Obi’s campaign team clarified that his visit to the Labour Party secretariat was a reconciliatory move, not an endorsement, as some media outlets had reported.

Reacting to the situation, Ndubuaku said Abure’s tenure is on shaky ground, emphasizing that “Peter Obi we know” would not endorse him under the current circumstances.
“There was no way that the Peter Obi we know can endorse Abure, especially in this present situation. You can’t tell a man he is not doing the right thing and still go ahead to endorse him. It is wrong,” Ndubuaku stated.
He further recounted a personal meeting with Obi, where Obi confirmed he had not endorsed Abure. Obi’s spokesperson, Yunusa Tanko, also released a statement after Obi’s visit to the secretariat clarifying this position.
Ndubuaku added, “You need to listen to what Obi is saying. He said he wants to make peace within the party. The only problem he has with Abure, in my opinion, is the fact that the man is not doing the right thing. He just wants the right thing to be done. That is all.”
“If Obi calls for a meeting, it will be between the real owners of the party and the transactional hijackers. This is because if nobody challenges you, you can get away with anything. It is the only way to reposition the party and its structure.”
